Great title, had me wondering what this book could be about. A psycho secretary?
Nope. More like a narcissistic boss who cares very little about her employees or how she treats people.
I didn’t care much for ANY of the characters. They were all flawed and I didn’t root for one of them. In fact, I wanted them to all fall down.
The actual secretary only had herself to blame for her impending downfall. Her boss didn’t ever think she’d get caught. Everyone just seemed blah and uncaring. At times I was bored with the book and found myself wanting to skip to the end. I didn’t. However, when I did get to the end I found it fascinating. I understood how the secretary felt. Betrayal can be lethal. The abuse she endured over the years, even though it was her own selfishness- made it sad for how it ended. Oh well. At least I finished the book.

This is the story of Christine Butcher, an average wife and mother, who accepts the position of personal assistant to Mina Appleton. After 18 long years of service, loyalty, and absolute discretion it appears secrets are about to spill. When the celebrated Mina is accused of partaking in some unethical business transactions in order to profit for herself Christine has to ask herself how far she is willing to go to protect Mina.

Part psychological thriller part court room drama and totally entertaining. I'll admit that it is a slow burn of a book but I find Renee Knights writing so engaging that it didn't take away from this novel. I had no idea before reading this how cutthroat the supermarket industry is. Another point goes to the author for writing a realistic thriller one where suspension of disbelief is not required. You know all the while that the story is leading up to something big and Renee Knight does not disappoint. The last quarter of this book had me glued to the pages. I thought the ending was bloody brilliant! 4 stars!

People are not what you might think. Below the surface, there can lie a totally different person. In The Secretary, emphasis on the first syllable of secretary - secret, we meet Christine Butcher, a young wife and mother seeking a secretarial position. She's offered a job working for the second in command at Appleton grocery's administration. Christine snaps up the job. We get to watch as she smoothly fits into Mina Appleton's work and personal lives, making herself nearly indispensable as Mina works her way up the corporate ladder. But is she indispensable?

When after many years of working for Mina Appleton, Christine, Mina, and Mina's driver, Dave, all wind up in a court proceeding. During the trial, Christine seems to change. That change have consequences.

I thought this was a very good story, but rather predictable through much of it. I'll be honest; I didn't like the characters very well. I found Christine to be a very weak woman, willing to sacrifice her marriage and her child for her job. Mina, despite her false facade of friendliness and compassion, always came across, to me, as a greedy, grasping viper.

I can't say that this is a book that left me feeling good about much of anything. It's a sad commentary on the shallowness of people's lives, the desire to feel better than those around you. And greed! In the end, for both women, it's all about greed, in one way or another, about which one will receive the most attention.
