What a great story. I love horses and just had to see what this was all about.

The water horses are a race of beings that live in the water, emerging to feed on flesh or drag you to a watery death. The thought makes me shiver.

Every year, riders mount these monstrous beasts for the Scorpio Races. It’s hard enough to win a regular horse race. In this race, you have to worry about surviving as much as winning.

The character’s are numerous and very genuine. Puck is a young lass willing to risk her life in the races. She lost her parents to the water horses, and now her older brother is leaving her and her younger brother Finn to fend for themselves. The money from the race would help save their home.

Sean and his stallion, Corr, are four time winners of the races. He’ll ride again this year, but the stakes are much higher.

Puck and Sean have a growing attraction for each other. But both must win the race.

I so loved this world and the character’s that galloped through the pages, human and other. I wanted this one to win. And that one to win. This one to stay. That one to stay. I feared the worst and hoped for the best.

This story is so much more than a race. I struggle to even tell you about it. There’s desperation and hope, bravery and honor, magic and danger. And I couldn’t have asked for a better final scene.

The Scorpio Races Maggie Stiefvater Books Reviews

What. A. Good. Book. Thoroughly fascinating. For several months, I've been searching for a book to read that would keep me utterly engaged and invested in the story. This book delivered on every premise. As a lifelong reader, one of the most important aspects to a story--for me--is that it be told in an intelligent manner. I want the characters in the story to be able to speak to me, know their own mind, and to be as real as possible. This book really hit it out of the park in that aspect. I absolutely love the spitfire heroine that is so perfectly flawed and full of piss-n-vinegar, that I imagined she and I could be the very best of friends. The only drawback to the story of Puck and Sean is that the book ended far too soon, and I am still wildly curious at how their story will play out. Maggie, if you are reading this, PLEASE write a sequel. I want to know of Puck and Sean's life and marriage and any babies they will have. I want to know what happens. Thank you.
This book was highly recommended to me by a friend who is very well read from young adult literature to the high-brow classics. She told me she has read this book about 4 times and never gets sick of it. As soon as I started reading it, I realized this is not really my “type” of book – it’s kind of a fantasy type book with mythical horse-like creatures. I soon got past that prejudice as I realized it’s a story about our complex relationships with animals, family, neighbors, and the community we grow up in. The community is shown in all it’s complexity – how some long to escape, others find ways to shine in it, and many just struggle with it. A community that generally stands still in time, the Scorpion Races brings in people from all over to mingle with the locals once a year to watch the event – a dangerous race on water horses that often results in the death of the human rider. The cash prize that the winner receives is ostensibly enough for one to risk it all – but the prize alone is not the only lure for all the racers. The book is a compelling glimpse at culture, poverty, competition, and gender that does not speak down to young adult audiences. It’s a book that can be enjoyed by teens and adults alike and both boys and girls. Whenever I read this book, I had the most fantastically magical dreams about the horse creatures in the book – and I don’t usually remember dreams. Something about this books sparks your imagination because it is so unique, but has an archetypical, universal quality to it as well.
I have lived a good long time...longer than I will admit to here, and I have been reading voraciously since before kindergarten. I have read a lot of books. Many of them have been good, and a precious few have been great. The Scorpio Races is as good a book as I have read in many years. It was so good, in fact, that once I finished it, I mourned for a few minutes and then promptly started re-reading it.

The story is intriguing...the Scorpio Races are races set on a small island (fictional, but it feels a lot like an Irish offshore island) between Cappaill Uisce, the water horses of Celtic folklore. These are no Disney water horses...they eat meat, drink blood and kill. Each other, and humans. But the island, Thisby, and the horses are connected in ways modern man has trouble understanding. They have ancient blood ties past remembering. Two of the contenders in this years race are Sean Kendricks, and Puck Connelly.

Sean has been working with the Cappaill Uisce since he was a boy. Described by the islanders as having "one foot on land, and one in the sea" he has won the races for the past four years on a stallion named Corr. He loves Corr deeply, and the horses in his charge love him and his magic.

Puck is an orphaned girl who is riding in the races for the first time, as the first woman to compete. She is also riding her mundane island horse, Dove, rather than one of the Cappaill Uisce...another first. She is hindered in her efforts by almost everyone on the island. Everyone but Sean, who is drawn to her for reasons he cannot explain.

The two face many obstacles. Chief among them is Mutt Malvern, the cruel son of the richest man on the island (and Sean's employer). Another hurdle they must face is that each has desperate reasons for needing to win the race, but to do that, they must beat the person they are growing to love. The love story is awkward and terribly sweet.

I can't really put my finger on what I find so compelling about this book. The story is unique, and the slight tinge of magic over everything on Thisby adds a delightful air of mystery. Its written by a YA author, which may be the reason the love story is so muted and delicious. We don't have sex to rely on making the story interesting. The writing must carry the story.

And the writing is superb. The suspense simply never lets up. One is completely drawn in by the two immensely likable main characters, and many of the lesser characters deserve their own book Finn and George Holly are two I would love to read more about. The rituals and traditions surrounding the races are unsettling, yet have the feel of ancient rhythms and rites. Stiefvater has an unswervingly deft hand in her timing and the pace of the story feels just right. The conclusion is a surprise, albeit one that satisfactorily resolves the dilemma of the two protagonists.

I was rather haunted by the story. I found myself thinking a lot about the story and the characters during the first read, and even the second. Sean, in particular caught my imagination. He is mysterious and magical and immensely attractive. Again, Ms Stiefvater reveals just enough of his background to help explain him, but we never fully understand him.

I will definitely read more by the author. I don't usually read YA novels, but this one is so exceptional that I too will make an exception.

The Darkest Legacy A Darkest Minds Novel Alexandra Bracken Books

For those long-time fans of Alexandra Bracken's emotional, action-packed The Darkest Minds series, The Darkest Legacy is a complex and accomplished new installment of a story whose characters and their relationships, their family, are its heart and soul. For those who are new to the series, The Darkest Legacy can stand on its own, or as an entry point into a wider narrative world about teens who are both powerless due to age and circumstance, and powerful due a twist of a fate and their unremitting will to protect each other and survive.

The Darkest Legacy picks up five years after the main series, which was told over the course of three full-length novels (The Darkest Minds, Never Fade, and In the Afterlight) and one collection of short stories and novellas (Through the Dark). The youngest of the four main protagonists of the main series, Suzume, who was a child in the earlier novels, is now a sixteen-year-old woman struggling with the complexities and contradictions of revolution and its aftermath. The villains of old may have been defeated (key word: may), but darkness has more than one body, and lives in more than one mind. The way the author expands the horizons of cruelty and human selfishness in this latest volume is, perhaps, a sign of the times in which it was written, but more likely an evolution of the sort of moral grayness and unflinching honesty about the human condition--its virtues and its malice--that characterized the earlier books.

In the Darkest Legacy, a grown Zu serves as the mouthpiece for what you might charitably call a public relations campaign, and uncharitably call propaganda. She assures young Psi like herself--children and teens who survived a disease that killed most of their peers, and left those spared with awesome (in the true sense of the word) and at times terrifying psionic powers--that the new U.S. government is on their side...as long as they're willing to make temporary, escalating concessions. Zu does this because her childhood experiences have taught her that revolution is never clean, that triumph is never easy, and she believes on some level that it is better to struggle within the system than to face the loneliness and fear of exile. But at heart, she performs her duties because she believes in her friends, who have their own complex relationship with the government and are, too, trying to forge a better path for the Psi, even if it's more steps back than forward most days.

But not all of Zu's friends believe this, and fissure has formed within the tight group of wanderers that is now the only family she knows. When an event Zu is speaking at is attacked and dozens of people are killed, blame soon falls on Zu, who has managed to escape with two mysterious Psi. After five years of trying to acclimate to normal life and society, Zu is once again on the run, with people she can only half-trust, in the hopes of proving her innocence to a country that believes she's only half-human.

Our favorite characters from the Darkest Minds appear, and it is like coming home to see them once again on the page. But Zu is the real light of the Darkest Legacy, the little girl grown up, the powerful woman who has come into her own--and will not be silenced again.

The Darkest Legacy A Darkest Minds Novel Alexandra Bracken Books Reviews

So, I loved this book tremendously! Bracken just picks the story right up 5 years after the last book ended. Things have not turned out the way the gang had hoped they would and 17year old Zu gets caught up in the middle of a pretty major conspiracy. It takes the whole gang reuniting to bring down the real bad guys and clear Zu's name. Plus we get to make some new friends as well as some new enemies along the way.
Having read through the first series when I came to this book I sort of felt burnout on the world and thusly it took me a month to read it when I usually devour a book this size in a day or two.

Alexandra Bracken does a good job in character development. The character of Zu was interesting and easily carried the weight of the book. The author was able to take her to new depths and create a character that was equal to or greater than Ruby the protagonist of the first series. there was something powerful about the character in the first series that's translated well into this work. I almost wish that the character could have been put into a different story with a completely new and fresh world for us to discover.

I dislike the storyline of the series mainly because of how much I am required to suspend my disbelief and to ignore logic. This is more of a stain from the previous series but does crop up in this book in places.
The pacing did feel a off while because of me picking me up and putting it down. However I do think that the techniques the author used in flashback chapters was hit and miss. It did make the story feel a bit choppy. Getting towards the end the story was getting stronger and had a better direction. However the ending was a slap in the face both in pacing and what happened. Let's just say something dramatic happens that should have taken a few chapters to solve but we get a time Jump Ahead in the future problem solved and set up for the next book. Making it feel like a gimmick to force the reader to buy the next book.
I've never read any previous books in the darkest minds series but the storyline of the darkest legacy sounded really good so I bought it and read it and I'm glad I did the darkest legacy is definitely the best book I've ever read I love the main character Zu she is tough determined and is always the first one to take charge but also suffers from PTSD from the horrible things that happened to her in her life but she has the strength to move beyond that I love strong female characters and Zu is just awesome i also love her two sidekicks Roman and priyanka I didn't trust them at first but as I got further into the book i loved them I loved the characters from the previous books too especially vida Even though I haven't read the previous books their still awesome characters Even though the darkest legacy is technically the 4th book in the series it makes an excellent standalone read and despite people complaining about the ending I loved it it was a really happy and hopeful ending and it wrapped up pretty much everything in the storyline while still leaving things open for a sequel I also think the darkest legacy is way better than any hunger games book the world in the darkest legacy is way more believable and I think the overall storyline writing and characters is better than the hunger games

Another reason I like the darkest legacy is because it's very real to me yes it's a science fiction dystopian book but The way the U.S. Government treated the psi kids and the way the U.S. Government became a corrupt pretty much authoritarian state in the book is very plausible and I could definitely see our actual government going this rout in real life

Overall I highly recommend the darkest legacy it's an amazing dystopian novel with a strong female lead great characters writing and a great ending I'll definitely be reading the previous books in the series and I'll definitely be watching the darkest minds movie when it's released on blu ray

Highly recommended
I love this series. I love how each book spotlights one of the men and pairs each of them with a strong woman. I especially love the characters who are central to each of the stories - Addie Pearl and my absolute favorite, Bailey - all of our lives would be richer with those two in them. I do have a word of warning, however. Do not read the last few chapters on a commuter train if you have a tendency to cry at particularly emotional scenes. I totally recommend this and all of the Blue Hollow Falls novels.

Lavender Blue Blue Hollow Falls Donna Kauffman 9781420145496 Books Reviews

It seems this is the third book in the Blue Hollow Falls series about an small mountain town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I had not read either of the previous books so I can honestly say this is a standalone. However, I will also admit that there is good possibility that I will go back and read the first 2. Hannah and three other friends have bought an old house in Blue Hollow Falls and are opening a lavender store with a tea room. These four women have become friends because they have all lost someone close to them and met in a grief counseling group. Each has come to terms with their loss (mostly) and now are living together and starting this venture. The Romance revolves around Hannah and Will, a stonemason who is repairing their old house. This book’s theme of loss is consistent throughout the book and what makes it a good and meaningful read. Hannah and Will realize they have both suffered loss, and between them, they develop a loving relationship. Will has a teenage son who plays a prominent role in this book, and between Jake and his friend, Bailey, I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with them. A nice contemporary read that has all the feels. The “heat quotient” was mild to moderate, so if you love a good small town story, and I am a sucker for them, this is a very good read!
Since Wilson McCall appeared in the first book of this series, I have been dying to know his story. He obviously had some major stuff going on, but he definitely wasn't talking about it. Then he had an unexpectedly emotional reaction to Jake's learning to play the fiddle in Bluestone and Vine. That just broke my heart for Will, and I was thrilled for him to get his HEA.
The path to that HEA is very emotional. I didn't even try to count the number of times I had to wipe tears from my eyes in order to keep reading. Given the synopsis, that wasn't a big surprise. The surprise was how uplifting the discussions of loss were -- but in a realistic way, not a patronizing way. Everyone is this book has lost at least one important person, and they all have ideas about dealing with loss to bring to the table. If I had to pick a central message for this book, it would be that those of us who are still living have to find ways to honor and remember those we have lost while we live the best way we know how. Having just lost my mother last year, this resonated with me.
Hannah is a new character in the series, and I enjoyed getting to know her. She is very grounded and in touch with herself. She is also very thoughtful and compassionate. I loved her. She is exactly the kind of woman I would love to go to dinner with or hang out with.
I also really loved the friends Hannah brought with her into Blue Hollow Falls. Those women are hilarious, and I hope they are getting stories soon. I love this series, and the characters that populate it. I can't recommend it highly enough.
We return to Blue Hollow Falls for the third book in the series; Lavender Blue. Donna finally gives the readers widower Will McCall’s story, this is a guy who has intrigued from the beginning, and the author has kept the information release in regard to him and his son Jake, at more of a slow trickle rather than a steady flow. Which essentially means I have been itching to read this book since before it was even written!

"It’s hard… Asking for help."

I knew before starting that Lavender Blue would be an emotional read. The one thing you do get to know about Will if you have read the previous books in the series, is that apart from his apparent love for his son, this is a man that keeps his emotions about everything firmly on lockdown. Not one to waste breath on words either, so if one word will suffice as an answer you won’t find him spilling unnecessary sentences if the conversation doesn’t require it.

They were not going to be wallowers. They were going to be warriors… Life warriors.

Hannah Montgomery, and her friends Vivi, Avery and Chey are new to the area, having bought a rundown farmhouse and the surrounding lavender fields, the four women are looking for a fresh start, opening new businesses and moving on with their lives. The one thing that binds them all – Grief, each of them has suffered loss, and they have built the foundations of their friendship by giving each other the strength they need when they are struggling with their losses. Something that also draws Hannah to Will, and vice versa.

His one baby step forward today had turned into a full on marathon and he wasn’t quite sure how he felt about any of it…

Although a romance, this is also a story about learning to live with loss, and move on from grief. Hannah you could almost say has embraced hers, while Will has locked it away in a box, and refused to deal with it. But it’s starting to now have an effect on his relationship with his son, and seeing how Hannah deals with her loss gives him hope and the push that he needs to open up and try to deal with the loss of his wife all those years ago. This can always be a tricky subject in relation to writing a romance where a dead spouse plays a part, but I think because the author touched upon Will’s guilt for having feelings for another woman other than his wife, it wasn’t overplayed, I think the length of time passed also helped in that regard as well, because although the grief for him is still fresh the loss of his relationship isn’t.

The whole thing had felt healthy, natural, and very real…

Not the fluffiest of reads, but then I wasn’t expecting it to be, Jake added the light to Will’s dark, and Hannah’s openness made it easier to digest the loss she was dealing with too. The romance isn’t heavy in this one, but when it came, it was touching, sweet, emotional and Will was everything I expected him to be in regards to how he treated Hannah.

"Sometimes three really is the perfect size crowd…"

According to Lavender & Mistletoe is the next book due for release from the series, which is in September, I am hoping that we do get to return to Blue Hollow Falls before then though, because this is a series I am coming to love more and more with each new addition to it.
Great story of lost and grieving and how everyone handles it differently and how some have found ways to help others thru their grief and finding love.
I think I have read all of Ms. Kaufman's books and enjoyed then. But this book did not live up to expectations. Good characters but it took too many words to tell the story.
This was a great addition to the Blue Hollow Falls series! I've been waiting for this story since we were introduced to Will and his son, Jake in the first book of the series. Donna Kauffman, you delivered a wonderful tale filled with love, friendship and humor. I absolutely loved this book!!
Very good book. Fast moving and exciting, interesting characters with some depth. A fair amount of action, but still reasonably cerebral. I am surprised by how many people seemed bothered by the recipes at the end of each chapter. I liked that touch, but, even if I didn't, I would just move on and not read the recipe, and it would not bother me in the least. I do agree to some extent with the criticism of how stereotypically bad and ugly most of the Russians are. On the other hand, it seems like many authors go out of their way these days to make everyone ambiguous, and there ends up being no characters that the reader really likes. So, in a way, it was refreshing to me to have some characters who were really really good and some who were really really bad. All in all, very entertaining, and I think I will read the next in the series.

Red Sparrow A Novel The Red Sparrow Trilogy Jason Matthews 9781501171574 Books Reviews

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Why?

Matthews’ facility with language is amazing and precise. His writing paints images rich in color and emotion. The world-building is excellent.

The humor. Hero Nate Nash has two bosses, Marty Gable and Tom Forsythe. Gable’s sarcastic remarks, belied by his supportive actions, are truly funny. Heroine Dominika Egarova also thinks of her cruel superiors in hilariously rude terms. And the Sparrow School of seductive spycraft they blackmail her into attending (“training for ‘prostitutkas’, not staff officers,” she protests) teaches a list of techniques expressed in amusing metaphorical terms.

The characters are extremely well developed. There are many, but I never got confused because each has a distinct personality.

Complex plotting. Matthews skillfully conveys the conflict that arises when those who give orders have different priorities than those who put their lives on the line. The intriguing plot includes plenty of violence, tricky spycraft, and suspense.

I felt neutral about
Nate and Dominika’s relationship. As they are mostly separated by thousands of miles, disparate governments, and secrecy, it’s minor.
The short recipes at chapter ends. I skipped over them.
While not exactly abrupt, the ending is an obvious segue into the second novel, but getting there was such a pleasure, I wasn’t upset.
As I draft this review of Jason Matthews' novel, Red Sparrow, a film based on the book is showing in theaters nationwide. I've decided not to view the movie. I can't imagine that any screen adaptation, however skillful, could possibly do justice to this extraordinary tale of espionage.

Authentic detail of espionage
Red Sparrow is not a conventional spy story. True enough, it's well-written, ingeniously plotted, and endlessly suspenseful. On that account alone, fans of John le Carré, Joseph Kanon, or Alan Furst should appreciate it. But the book rises above the level of the genre because the author has infused it with detailed, intimate knowledge of authentic espionage tradecraft employed both by the CIA and by Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, the SVR. Red Sparrow also reveals a great deal about the SVR's structure and practices. I was so taken aback by the level of detail that I checked a number of details at random; they all proved accurate. I can easily imagine this novel being passed around at the CIA training center known as the Farm as a fictionalized (if no doubt exaggerated) account of what an officer might encounter in the field.

Two central characters in a cat-and-cat game
The Red Sparrow of the title is Dominika Egorova, a niece of the First Deputy Director of the SVR. When an injury ends her promising career in the ballet, her uncle presses her into the intelligence service, sending her first to the standard officer training and then to "Sparrow School," where she is taught seduce enemy agents. Her assignment is to entrap and recruit Nathaniel Nash, the young CIA officer who is known to be the handler of MARBLE, a high-level mole in the SVR. "Nate was one of a small group of CIA 'internal ops' officers trained to operate under surveillance on the opposition's home ground." His assignment is to recruit her once she has managed to enter his life. The result can't be described as a cat-and-mouse game. It's a cat-and-cat game, and it's fascinating.

The supporting cast on the American side includes a pair of veteran CIA officers who assist and guide Nate as he maneuvers through his relationship with Dominika. There are also a sociopathic US Senator and a number of FBI agents who wander in and out of the background, all of them coming across as incompetent. (This no doubt reflects the ages-old suspicion between the CIA and the FBI.) On the Russian side, the leading characters include Dominika's uncle and several members of his staff at the SVR. One key figure there is a "poisonous dwarf" who serves as his counterintelligence chief. (He appears to be modeled on the five-foot-tall Nikolai Yezhov, a sadistic murderer who served for a year as head of Stalin's secret police. He was known as "The Poison Dwarf.") Vladimir Putin himself makes several cameo appearances.

About the author
Author Jason Matthews' official bio on his publisher's web site is worth quoting at length "Jason Matthews is a retired officer of the CIA’s Operations Directorate. Over a thirty-three-year career he served in multiple overseas locations and engaged in clandestine collection of national security intelligence, specializing in denied-area operations. Matthews conducted recruitment operations against Soviet–East European, East Asian, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean targets. As Chief in various CIA Stations, he collaborated with foreign partners in counterproliferation and counterterrorism operations." In other words, it should be no surprise that Jason Matthews could write a book that exhibits authentic espionage tradecraft. Red Sparrow is the first novel in a trilogy of the same name.

Bride of Ivy Green Tales from Ivy Hill Julie Klassen 9780764218170 Books

This is a beautiful, satisfying conclusion to the Ivy Hill series, one that I both dreaded ending yet couldn't read fast enough to see what happened to my friends. While I am very attached to Jane and loved seeing her story continue here, I was thrilled to see Mercy, who I consider to be the other main character, get so much page time here. Her story is just so lovely and endearing, and after a lot of heartache, it was good to see her happiness. Although there were a few times that I wondered how it would come about, and it left me wishing more for another character, all in all, Mercy's story culminates in just the way it needs to.

Jane's story has several new discoveries that kept it feeling fresh and entertaining. I also appreciated that life's stings are still present, as to make everything work out perfectly would have felt a bit unrealistic. It very much has the feeling of taking the bitter with the sweet and appreciating what you're given.

I wasn't quite as enamored as the third story line of Victorine, but in the end, it's neat to see where she fits in and solves a significant mystery that harkens back to the first book. I was pleased - more like thrilled - to find out that there will be a Christmas novella. I know who I'd like it to be about, but of course, will be happy just to be back in Ivy Hill again.

I have loved this series and am definitely sad to see its end. I do strongly recommend reading this one from the beginning, as so much builds with each book. It's a series that I could read again one day. Now to begin the long wait until another novel by Julie Klassen.

Also, if you need a refresher on the characters, there is a list on the Ivy Hills website.

Bride of Ivy Green Tales from Ivy Hill Julie Klassen 9780764218170 Books Reviews

Would recommend any book by Julie Klassen. She writes with love for sure. I fell in love with Jane, Mercy and Rachel immediately. Then James, Gabriel and sweet Joseph Kingsley. Aunt Matilda and Winston and sweet Jack Avi. It was dream series. I'm such a romantic!
Well written with memorable characters you can identify with. You will love to eescape into these pages and live in Ivy Green.
This seemed to be quicker to read than the first two of the series It reads like a Hallmark movie which isn't bad it just wasn't as complex as the others I love the historical facts and faith peppered in the story
I fell in love with this place and these characters in the first book, and this one is wonderfully written as well. I'm so glad to see there will be another in 2020. I enjoy the element of romance without being smutty, and how these stories hook you from the get go. Julia Klassen is a wonderful storyteller!
This is a very good read . You don't want to read this series out of order. I came to love the characters and anticipate their next action in the books. Julie Klassen seems to transport the reader to a different time and place. Love the map which an idea of the town.
I'm really not much of a series reader, but I love Julie Klassen's writing style. I have loved every minute I have spent in Ivy Hill. The characters and setting are charming. This series is the ultimate comfort reading for me. This entry wrapped everything up nicely. I would love to spend more time with these characters. I'm really sad to see them go. I would recommend this series to lovers of quiet, cozy novels and Regency era fiction. Make sure you start with the first book, The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill.

I received a free copy of this book through Netgalley.
I absolutely loved this book. Of course I loved all three of the books in Tales from Ivy Hill. There is definitely room for another story here, but I am not aware if the Author is going to persue that avenue. The characters have been outstanding along with their descriptions. Also the countryside was someplace I would love to visit or live. Again another great book from a wonderful Author.

Be Prepared Vera Brosgol 9781626724440 Books Reviews

In the autobiographical "Be Yourself", Russian-American cartoonist Vera Brosgol recounts her time at a Russian-language scouting camp, touching on themes of doing anything to be accepted by your peers, to being blamed for an innocent screw-up. Touching, funny, and even sad in places, this is another extremely compelling work by a talented creator.
More of the great adolesence/childhood experiences of Ms. Brosgol as continued from Santa's Ghost.
awesome book very short sweet and like every camp you have a good friend and a bully if you read the book you should also read
Smile ,Sisters, and Drama some words in Russian
I saw the initial story on Free Comic Book Day, and knew I had to get the entire book.
It did NOT disappoint!!!
Lots of smiles, laughs, tears, reflections, and fluid well-done storytelling.
The hardback makes a great gift. I truly can recommend it for any age.
This book is great! My 9yo daughter loves it. Great for young campers, or girls trying to find their way in the world.
My daughter never reads books multiple times and she has read this many times now. She really wishes it had a sequel or just more. She said that lots of times. She is almost 11 years old.
This graphic novel is loosely based on the author’s real-life experiences and her Russian-American background and that makes for a unique twist on a familiar setting for some kids - summer camp! 9-year old Vera is a Russian immigrant and we learn at the beginning of the novel, she doesn’t doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular crowd. Or really any crowd at all. Her family is poor and their traditions and food are just enough “culturally off” to make her feel awkward among the girls she invites to a birthday sleepover that goes bad…. And oh man… how I felt for poor Vera that night! That’s some real-life cringe-worthy stuff though. Vera desperately wants to fit in and finally convinces her mother to send her and her brother to a Russian summer camp sponsored by their Orthodox church where they will learn the Russian language and religion along with the typical summer camp things - like learning why you shouldn’t feed the wildlife and finding a comfortable place to poop! Brosgol’s illustrations are outstanding with a foresty green color palette. And this book about the poor choices one can make in the quest for friendship along with that added layer of feeling like you don’t really belong enough in any culture makes this graphic novel feel like a blend of Shannon Hale’s Real Friends and Kelly Yang’s Front Desk. This would be a great recommendation for kids in about grades 4 or 5 and up.

CIRCE Madeline Miller Books

Brief summary, no spoilers.

I know it may be odd to talk about “spoilers” when this is the story of a mythological character, but there are reasons for that and I will explain in the review.

This book is told from the point of view of Circe, daughter of the sun Titan Helios. Her mother was Perse, a sea nymph who was the granddaughter of the Titan Oceanos.

We mainly know of Circe from the Odyssey and her interactions with Odysseus. She was known as a sorceress who lived on an island and turned men into pigs. We know from the Odyssey that Circe was often seen working at a huge loom surrounded by dangerous animals such as wolves and lions, yet they were all under her control. We also know from the Odyssey that Odysseus - by virtue of his wiles - not only avoids Circe’s sorcery but beds her as well. When he leaves she gives him advice on how to survive the perils on his seaward journey home to his homeland of Ithaca, such as Scylla and Charybdis, so he can reunite with his beloved wife Penelope and son Telemachus.

So why did I like this book so much? Well, stand back, because I’m about to gush.

I am a big fan of Greek mythology, and I was a big fan of this author’s previous book, The Song of Achilles. Yet this one was even better.

Circe was not a major figure in the Odyssey; in fact when I first opened the book I realized I got her mixed up with Calypso. But I won’t make that mistake anymore. This minor character has now become my favorite character of all thanks to this author’s brilliant work.

Because this book is told from Circe’s point of view, we get to intimately know her - not just her history and story but her thoughts as well. The reason this is so important is because we come to empathize with Circe. We tend to think of the Greek Gods as so fickle and often cruel - and indeed they are often depicted that way - yet with Circe, we meet a goddess who is so human and so very, very likable.

The reason I made the “no spoilers” comment at the start, is because Circe’s experiences include her meeting and interacting with various other figures from Greek myth, and it’s a big part of the enjoyment of this novel to experience it the way the author intended, without knowing what is going to happen next.

I took a few days to read this book but that was not because it was a slow read. Just the opposite; I was so happy while reading it that I would stop myself after each chapter just to pace myself so it wouldn’t end too soon.

I highly (obviously) recommend this to any fans of Greek mythology and for sure to anyone who enjoyed The Song of Achilles. But you don’t have to know much about the Odyssey or Greek mythology to love this book. Although this novel is about a god, it’s really a story about what it means to be human.

CIRCE Madeline Miller Books Reviews

I’ve been waiting for Circe since I closed the endpapers of The Song of Achilles. Miller has the expert’s eye and a storyteller’s touch - a female storyteller at that, which makes her remarkable among the other writers and rewriters of the classic Greek tales.

Here, her gifts are used in telling the story of Circe, child of Helios and one of the lesser gods, the first witch of the world. She spins a tale of bravery, gullibility, fear and courage; she tells the tale of a goddess who has the heart of a mortal. I don’t want to give anything away and thus ruin Miller’s spellbinding tales, but it’s not a spoiler to say that I was astounded by the ways in which Miller was able to imbue her heroine with the same human frailties and fears as those of us mere mortals the love of a mother, the burning shame of disgrace, the slow and fast at once finding of ones identity and center, the ways in which we all reach for more than perhaps we know, the giddy ness of losing ones fear and with it, the donning of grace and gratitude.

Circe’s tales are big, and they’re writ large here. And yet they feel so real and common even as they burn with a strange fire.

Miller deserves to be mentioned among the greats. I look forward to her next creation with excitement and of course more than a little adoration.
Give yourself the beautiful opportunity to see Circe as she has never been seen. Read this book right away!!
This book caught me by surprise. I was swept up in the tale of Circe, a goddess, and amazed by the simple truths of human life revealed. Madeline Miller captured both the beauty and bitter futility of being human, and I will be philosophically turning these thoughts over in my head for years to come. Timeless masterpiece that will only become sweeter with each read.
{My Thoughts}
What Worked For Me

A Classic Tale Reimagined – Taking a classic story and reinventing it with a modern twist is nothing new. We see it time after time, but the usual reimagining places the characters and plot in a contemporary setting as the story plays out. With Circe, Madeline Miller kept the characters and the setting, and instead shifted the focus, placing it solely on Circe. Those of you with a background in mythology will see many, many elements from classic Greek mythology (especially The Odyssey) popping up in this book. However, if you’ve lived under a rock and never even knew there was such a thing as mythology it won’t matter. Miller gives you everything you need to know and she does it seamlessly.

A Woman with Attitude – If you’re anything like me, you will come to adore Circe, the book and the woman. Born into one of the two most powerful families of gods, Circe adored her father, Helios, but never quite measured up. Where her siblings were gorgeous and powerful from an early age, Circe was plain and seemingly powerless. Tormented by her own family, Circe grew more and more fascinated with mortals. Falling in love with one, brought out her previously unknown powers of witchcraft.

“I was too wild to feel shame. It was true. I would not just uproot the world, but tear it, burn it, do any evil I could to keep Glaucos by my side. But what stayed most in my mind was the look on my grandmother’s face when I’d said that word, pharmaka. It was not a look I know well among the gods.”

This girl had gumption and she used her new power to punish her rival, creating a monster all came to feared. But, she paid a price for going too far. Circe was banished to the small island of Aiaia for eternity. This is where the book Circe really took off for me. On the island, I found it impossible not to admire and root for this woman who year after year, century after century, faced her fears, honed her powers, and learned to stand up for herself.

“She was gone. But I said it anyway, to that great empty room and my son’s dreaming ears “You do not know what I can do.”

Soap Opera of the Gods – You might think a story of a woman alone on an island could get dull, but you would be wrong. Circe lived a lonely life, but was not without the occasional visitor, many bringing adventure and challenges to her life. Hermes flitted in and out with news and gossip from the worlds of gods and mortals. Her sister, Pasiphae, granted Circe temporary exile to help deal with her little Minotaur problem. Shipwrecked sailors soon discovered the wrath of Circe. And then came Odysseus, perhaps her most well known visitor, bringing to Circe a lasting love she was willing to die for. The level of drama never failed!

That House – I really can’t say any more, but for those who have read Circe I want that house!

What Didn’t
Absolutely EVERYTHING worked for me in Circe!

{The Final Assessment}
Madeline Miller is definitely a writer to admire. Reinventing the life of a minor goddess into a remarkable woman while remaining faithful to the original mythology can be no small feat. Miller did it in the best way possible, by knowing her star character and sticking to her story. From start to finish Circe was all about Circe, no long tangents, no veering off into some other god’s story. Just Circe her life, her feelings, her mistakes, her heart, her choices. I haven’t yet read Millers’s debut, Song of Achilles, but I will. I’m already looking forward to that next trip to ancient Greece. If it’s anything like Circe, I’m sure to find the journey immersive, entertaining, exciting, everything! Just incase I haven’t been clear, I loved Circe. She will be one of my top ten books this year. Grade A
Yet this one was even better.

I understand for some people this story may seem repetitive and boring, but I loved this book... not only because i have a son that suffers from short term memory loss (although not to that degree and he is not medicated for it) but because I feel like it has something for all of us. One of Floras rules was “live in the moment whenever you can. You don’t need a memory for that”. That felt like just good advice to me. We are all better than we think we are and definitely more capable. I loved that she maintained that memory and it propelled her into having something of her own even tho as an adult reader I knew how it might go. I do have to admit If my son had it to that degree and was running off to the artic, i may have to medicate myself for the stress of it 😄, but I see in the story that everyone has their own parh and one is not better than another. That was a nice reminder for me. The writing was good and with the repetition it made you go through the struggles as a reader that Flora faced daily. I loved Jacob and their relationship. The only thing I found I didn’t care for in the story was Drake. People mentioned in reviews that they didn’t care for Paige but I loved her, she was a real friend and sometimes real friends fight. All and all I would highly recommend this book.

The One Memory of Flora Banks EMILY BARR 9780141368511 Books Reviews

I was obsessed with this book from start to finish. I became completely enveloped. I could feel the frustration and fear and pure joy Flora felt through the entire novel. Will definitely read this one a million times before I die.
I was disappointed in this book, I wanted it to go a different way than it did
Much better than I expected. Very interesting character. Nonpredictable plotline. The ending was very satisfactory, but I stoll wish it were longer!
The One Memory of Flora Banks is a wonderful book. Although I felt it a little confusing at times, the ending is simply amazing! The plot twists are strategically placed and clearly thought through. It is a "heavy" book, in the sense that it requires active reading but I would most definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.
This review originally appeared on herestohappyendings.com.

The One Memory of Flora Banks is probably one of the best books that I've read to date - it was deep and told such an incredible story that was both heartwarming and heartwrenching at the same time.

The One Memory of Flora Banks starts off with our main character, Flora Banks, at a party that her best friend is throwing for her boyfriend, who is leaving to go study in Svalbard, Norway. It might not seem odd for any other teenager - a fun party at a beach house, with friends gathering to say their goodbyes and wish someone good luck. There's the typical activities - drinking, dancing, and of course, everyone is having fun. Except for Flora.

Flora, who had suffered, but recovered, from a brain tumor when she was ten, does not have the ability to make new memories ever since she had the tumor removed. While it was removed and she survived, she can no longer remember new things - her mind essentially resets itself a few times a day, and she doesn't remember anything that happened. She does, however, remember things from before the tumor took her ability to make new memories - including her family, the town she lives in, and her best friend. The best friend who is saying goodbye to her boyfriend, Drake, who is leaving for Norway.

Drake, who Flora finds herself sitting on the beach with and kissing.

Of course, Flora writes down what happened that evening, as she does with everything, she doesn't forget. She writes on her arms, she writes in a notebook, and she writes sticky notes and leaves them around, so she can remember things. So she does this so that she can remember her very first kiss with this boy that she finds herself having feelings for.

But the thing is, the next morning, Flora does not need these notes - she remembers being on the beach with Drake. She remembers the kiss. She doesn't understand how - this is the first thing she has been able to remember since the brain tumor was removed, and she isn't sure how to deal with it.

"I can remember it. I remember things from before I got sick, and now I remember kissing Drake. I know, now, that I am not a little girl, because I kissed a boy on a beach, and he asked me to spend the night with him. I am not ten. I am seventeen.
I can remember it. The stone, or Drake, made me remember.
Perhaps this is what it is to fall in love."

When Flora's parents leave to go to Paris to tend to their son, Flora's brother, who is terminally ill, they leave Flora in the care of her best friend, Paige. But her friend has seen the writing on Flora's arms, and the notes in Flora's bag, and she knows that Flora and Drake kissed. So to punish her, she leaves her alone.

Alone for days, Flora takes care of herself by writing reminder notes to herself - things like her parents are in Paris, things like she should clean up, and she manages to keep herself going. Her parents aren't aware of the falling out she has had with Paige, and they think that she is there taking care of Flora, as planned. But Flora is by herself, and she hides this well.

While she is home alone, she begins talking to Drake through e-mails, telling him that she remembers the kiss and she wants to be with him. The two of them e-mail back and forth, which warms Flora's heart, and she slowly starts falling in love with him. But when he decides that maybe things won't work out because she isn't in Norway, she sets off on a journey that will take her there, in order to surprise Drake and show him how much she cares.

The journey to Norway is a difficult one - after all, Flora can't remember things past a few hours, so she will forget names, faces, and where she is, unless she continues to keep notes and review them. Even with that, the journey is unlike anything she has ever been through - all in the name of love and the kiss from a boy that she can't forget.

“I am really here. Yet I know I am not. I am inside something that must be buried in my head. I am layers deep in my own brain.”

This is such an amazingly written book - since Flora is our narrator, we more or less get to hear her thoughts and see the world how she sees it, including the difficult things, like forgotten memories, not knowing who people are, and the overwhelming desire to find Drake.

This book is powerful and tells a story of what great lengths that the human heart can go to in the name of love.

I haven't read anything quite like this - I have read books that deal with memory loss and amnesia, but nothing quite so in-depth and focused like The One Memory of Flora Banks. This book is really amazing, and obviously well researched, and I think the author did a superb job of writing Flora's character.

While I guess the ending hadn't really been what I was expecting, it wraps up the book so nicely and makes the story feel complete. So many things in this book are depressing, but at the end of the book, there is a new hope given to both Flora and the reader, which I loved.

Flora's character is written so well - I found myself really loving her and hoping for her throughout the entire novel. While she did develop a quick love for Drake, it's because she believes that the reason she can remember the kiss from Drake is because he must certainly be the one - they must be meant to be together. The journey that she sets off on in order to find him is amazing. It shows just how strong and determined that Flora is.

Paige's character, on the other hand, is pretty much a jerk, and I found myself disliking her from the very beginning. Ditching out on something important like watching over Flora because Flora kissed Drake was kind of immature - seeing as how their relationship wasn't going to work out anyway. The way she spoke to Flora and didn't want to help out with keeping her safe while her parents were away was selfish and hurtful to Flora, regardless.

With an engaging story and a determined character who is willing to go to great lengths to get what she wants and hold on to a single memory, The One Memory of Flora Banks is the kind of book that you won't want to put down until you've finished it completely, and even then you're going to want to read it again!

Note I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I can appreciate that Flora's story has an unconventional ending that has multiple dimensions. Flora struggles as I do but to such a deeper extent and yet as she flails through life she is happy to be living and I found my self inspired by this beautiful character (SPOILER ALERT)The ending is sad, with the death of a dear family member and ally. But somehow hope still lingers though everything is lost. The book closes with Flora learning which people in her life really matter and a world of possibilities open up to her despite all she has been through and "lost". I expected this to be another dumb love story and was disappointed in the best way!
I had no idea what this book was all about - I have to admit that reading it at times and being within the thought processes of Flora made me feel uncomfortable and almost anxious. As I read through it I couldn't imagine what the ending could be - but I loved the book. Very different - yet it made you care about Flora and about her brother. Highly recommend but be aware that it is a unique experience, and worth it in the end.
Loved this first book in a new series. Gabe was such a fabulous guy and a great dad. Addison wore two different hats- on one hand she was the carefree woman who had a monthly sexy rendezvous with Gabe when she was in New Orleans on business and on the other hand she was a checklist making single mother to a 5 yr old daughter. Gabe did not know her to be a single mother and she wanted to keep it that way. Until their worlds came together in the same city. Gabe was way ahead of Addison on making plans for them to be together especially after he found out that they both had a 5 yr old child. Addison was thinking that would scare him away and he already had them married, with a dog, white picket fence and more kids. She didn’t even want to date anyone. Their parenting styles were completely different but worked for them. Gabe lived with his mother and his mother helped take care of his son, Cooper. Addison raised her daughter Stella differently than Gabe in that she let Stella try things and be her own person and it worked because Stella was friendly, outgoing, adventurous little girl. Cooper was a little more cautious and careful about everything and tended to overthink things. As much as I loved Gabe and Addison as a couple because they were hot together, you could just feel the chemistry between them, I loved the friendship between Stella and Cooper. Stella basically became a protector to Cooper and took care of him. It was after an event at preschool came to light that Gabe started to second guess how he was as a father. He distanced himself from Addison to prove to himself he could be the father Cooper needed and Addison realized she had to let him figure it out on his own, similar to how she raises Stella. She needed to let Gabe know he wasn’t alone but that she would give him the space he needed. It actually helped Gabe and Addison realize that the other balanced each other out and they were exactly what they needed.
I enjoyed the single parents group that Gabe and then Addison belonged too. I can wait to get more stories from them. Especially Gabe’s brother Logan! This was a great book and I am excited for more!

Going Down Easy Boys of the Big Easy eBook Erin Nicholas Reviews

This story was interesting and could have been so much more but in all there was a lack of emotional depth and way too much repetition of inner thoughts. The basic premise was fun but the heroine was pretty unlikeable and self-absorbed and the Hero a bit too sweet. And he definitely had the same thoughts over and over and I got pretty tired of reading them. There were a fair number of sex scenes (and almost-sex scenes) which were fine but i would have enjoyed it more if I had "felt" the chemistry between H/h rather than been told it existed. That said, I finished the book and I might read the next one in the series.
This is the first book in a promising new series featuring single parents and set in the colorful, historic Big Easy, New Orleans. In this book we meet Gabe Trahan, co-owner and bartender at his family's tavern, and Addison Sloan, his once a month fling who lives in New York. The arrangement works well for them, keeping things light and never getting personal, until Addison moves to New Orleans. As much as Gabe has decided he wants more now that they’re living in the same city, Addison is determined to walk away, but somehow their lives get more and more intertwined.

It took me a while to warm up to Addison and I really didn’t like her in the beginning. She came across as selfish and she was really unfair to Gabe, jerking him around with mixed messages about their relationship or lack thereof. As I continued reading and got to know more of her backstory, I understood her a little more, although it still took some time to win me over. Finally, she got on board, but I just had a feeling she would do something to sabotage the good things in her life that were outside her comfort level. Well, let’s just say, I may have misjudged Addison and was very surprised by what transpired because both she and Gabe had a few things to learn.

The kids really made this book for me, and I was fascinated by the setup, with Gabe's son being more like Addison and Addison's daughter having a personality more similar to Gabe’s. Cooper is cautious, contemplative and practical, and Stella is enthusiastic, adventurous and perpetual motion. They were both entertaining and adorable and had full-size personalities for pint-sized five-year-olds. They were endearing and delightful, and also provided some interesting object lessons for their parents. This book tugged at my emotions, made me laugh and warmed my heart. I definitely recommend it for a steamy, emotional, feel-good, fantastic read.

*I reviewed this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.
I just received this book yesterday and am only a few chapters in, but I cannot put it down! As a woman who has questioned her own culture identity for years, America's introduction resonated deeply with me. With each story that follows, I continue to be engaged by the lessons, hardships and knowledge the contributors have experienced throughout their own cultural journeys here in the US. This is an eye-opening, must read!

American Like Me Reflections on Life Between Cultures edition by America Ferrera Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

This is a collection of people's experiences in America. A lot of them are very familiar to me, as I have brown skin as well, but a ton of it was new and eye opening. This is easy to get through and will help you understand those around you more deeply. Highly recommended.
The ability to share such personal stories makes this audiobook a perfect companion
This is a great compilation of the voices and experiences of people who are uniquely American, some very well-known. The essays are truthful, enlightening and encouraging. My main takeaways are admiration and hope for the future of our country. The struggle is worth it.
It was refreshing to read the stories of so many Americans whose life experiences are so relatable to plenty of us stuck between cultures
This timely book includes key life stories of prominent contemporary Americans of different ethnic and racial backgrounds. Each personal account tells how the individual overcame the experience of "apartness" to eventually contribute to the unfolding story of American life.
There isn't enough literature out there that talks about what it is like to live between two cultures. This book has a variety of different essays from entertainers, comedians, and other famous individuals on fitting into the American culture and keeping their ties to their backgrounds. Within all of the essays, there is a common theme of being proud of who you are and where you came from. Highly recommend reading, some of the essays are light and short reads.
I just got this book today and I CAN’T PUT IT DOWN! This is bringing back so many memories I had as a young girl. I identify through so many of these stories. Thank you America for having the courage to believe in yourself despite what people told you. I can’t wait to start gifting this book to people!
I was a little bit disappointed in this series when I finished. I read through it all and wanted to love it but it felt like something kept holding me back from fully buying into the story. The universe Roth created was such a fantastic place to dive into and expand upon but not enough was learned in this series.

What I liked:
- The idea of the current is such an interesting and unique idea. It was cool that everyone had somewhat unique abilities that we're overpowered and take precedence over the story.
- The two main planets in the story Ogra and Thuvhe (Urek) were well thought out with interesting visuals.
- Through all of my dislikes I still liked both Cyra & Akos at the end.
- Roth did a very good job of writing from different points of view, I feel like different points of view is very hit or miss and Roth nailed it.

What I disliked:
- Akos sees his father as somewhat of a guiding force and is constantly seeking to save his brother Eijeh. As a reader I wanted to feel connected but I didn't have enough material to draw from on either character.
- I thought the "relationship" between Cyra and Akos started way too early in the series and was extremely obvious. As soon as you met the characters at the beginning of the series you know that they will end up together. That would be fine, except there wasn't enough build up to actually get to that point.
- The villain from the first book was much better even though the first book built up the 2nd books villain. There wasn't enough depth on the 2nd books villain, you saw him as pure evil and nothing else. To me a villain needs to have some ambiguity, you can't relate to him at all and strictly see him as the bad guy from the start. He had no redeeming qualities.
- Lazmet did not have a believable role of power in the story. As it seemed, literally everyone hated him including his closest advisors. I don't believe he was going to retain power without any allies.
- The end of the story seemed too easy. The bad guy loses with very few people dying and almost no one you care about.

Overall, I think this story and world have such a huge potential that was not fully achieved. I enjoyed the story but lament to say that it could have been so much better.

The Fates Divide Carve the Mark Veronica Roth Books Reviews

I enjoy this series.
Issue it had been so long since I'd read the first book that I struggled to remember details and people. I spent a long while trying to remember who was who.
While the book drags in several places, it was still worth it to me.
I am fascinated by these characters and places, and I'm looking forward to the next book! (There will be another, right?)
My Thoughts
I was so excited to see where Cyra and Akos story went with this book. We find out so many interesting things about the 2 and find out how their “fates” influence them. Elijeh, Akos brother becomes a large part of this story. Cyra and Akos become closer as they fight a war that can mean life or death for them. Will their love prevail or will they fall to their fates?

My Rating
I give this book 4 stars. There seemed to be some filler story added that I feel it could have done without. I did like the action and the angst that the characters worked through. However the end felt rushed and I would have liked a little more elaboration. Overall great series.
When I pre-ordered this book, I was so excited to see wha th might happen as a finale to Carve the Mark.

The first half of the book was interesting, we find out Cyra's dad is alive, they travel to Ogra which we didnt know much about from the first book, and we see more character development between Cisi and Isae.

I've never read a duology. So I didnt expect what happened in the middle. Usually the twist, or the secret, that changes the way of thinking for the whole series is at the end of a TRILOGY. But when I read what was revealed in the middle...

Did NOT see that one coming. M Night Shyamalan, you might have a run for your money on this girl.

Anyways, the second half of the book was more epic, focused on trying to keep the imminent war from happening, with some interesting turns.

Overall it was a good book. The only parts I thought that didn't need to be included were Eijeh's chapters. He narrates one chapter in the middle and it's pretty pointless. But his ending narration makes sense. The epilogue and that one chapter... eh, not so much.

5 out of 5 though, awesome book.
i enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to this one to explain more things and broaden their "world".. the first book had violence and so did this one which fit with how the characters were described, but holy cow it felt like the author randomly decided to make everyone start swearing in this book.. i felt like akos lost some of his strength and cyra could take or leave him by the end of the book.. i liked that we got to see more of the secondary characters in this book and you have to read it to find out what happens and a great plot twist about half way through, totally didn't see it coming.. i like how the author wrote sifa, you got to see how several people react to her and i like how it wasn't all wrapped up at the end with her.. she did some terrible things to her family and i like how it played out in this book..
I think I have a new favorite Cross brother. Jase & Bethany’s chemistry is off the charts. This book is intense, mysterious and of course there is the hot AF sex. Willow has once again captivated me with not only the story but also the characters. Once you start reading you will not want to stop. The ending ugh I need the next book ASAP. Truly an amazing read that I hope everyone one clicks.
Jase and Bethany are amazing. Their chemistry is beyond hot! This story is heart breaking, sexy and but wrenching. The hell these two have been through is crazy. They are in dire need to self each other. Can't wait for book two
Omg, I wish I can give more then five star because I would. It was such a page turner which I was not able to put it down. It was hot and sexy. I think I have a new love Jase sorry Carter. But the ending really girl.. So need book two of their story now.🖤
I have no words for Jase and Bethany. I hung on every word in this book. The suspense and actions between the two of them was hot. The pull they have towards each other is so electrifying.
Omg! Another Cross brother, another crush! Damn, if this keeps up I’m gonna fall in love with the whole family!

In this story, Jase Cross becomes infatuated with one Bethany Fawn. She is feisty, she’s got attitude bigger than her but most of all she is mourning...the loss of her sister Jenny puts Bethany in a downward spiral that has her chasing down answers in the wrong way and drawing attention to herself that Jase Cross doesn’t want on him or his family.

I gotta tell you, so far Willow has sucked me into Jase’s world so deep, I don’t know if I can crawl out anytime soon. This is only the beginning and I am gearing up to ride this Cross brother’s story till the end....
This is a fantastic book. I love Willow’s writing style. She sends you through a series of emotions and by the end you are in love with her characters. The Cross boys all have demons but Jase carries his and everyone else’s. You root for him and Bethany from the beginning because they are both fighting demons and together they at least forget them for a while. Jase is by far my most favorite Cross. He has softness that he wants to give but can’t......you will have to read to find out why.
5 CAPTIVATING STARS!! I was captivated with Jase and Bethany's story all the way through. This story had me on the edge of my seat with all the unknown, sexiness and suspense. I can't wait to get more of their story soon, I am so engrossed in these two. W. Winters is phenomenal in her storytelling and always a 1-Click for me.
Brace yourselves - 'A Single Glance' will have you reaching out for something to steady you!!
Holy mother of all things fictional!!
Folks- This book, is an intense, provocative, plot twisted, messy, break your heart in two kind of read. The characters just scream they need to tell you their story!
Willow continues to amaze me with the stories, and worlds she creates. Jase and Bethany's torrent of pain, lust, and connection - I am all in and ready for more!
I have a new favorite Cross brother and story!

The Passage TV Tiein Edition A Novel Book One of The Passage Trilogy Justin Cronin Books

Hands down, The Passage is proof-positive that, when placed in the right hands, one can still fashion diamonds from classic vampire tropes. At first blush, one might consider a 800-page dystopian thriller chock full of immortal, light-sensitive vampires; biblical undertones; an audacious time-jump that spans a century between the first third of the book and the remainder of the story; and the fate of the world resting squarely on the shoulders of an enigmatic preteen girl is too ambitious an endeavor. But Houston novelist Justin Cronin can seemingly do no wrong, and successfully sustains the narrative by defying expectations every step of the way.

The Passage is one of the finest written examples of apocalyptic horror—lurid, meditative, and epic in scope. Despite being a vampire saga, the book is peppered with such human themes as love, hope, destiny, friendship, and sufficient pathos to satisfy top-notch literature enthusiasts. The language is both poetic and beautiful, the dialogue believable and appealing, while the narrative shifts tempo—both in style and time period—in order to keep things intriguing.

Set in the near future, The Passage entwines a convoluted but convincing tale that spotlights a six-year-old girl named Amy, whose hapless mother abandons her to a Memphis convent, home of clairvoyant African-born nun Lacey Kudoto. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Brad Wolgast and his partner are assigned to acquire Amy and twelve death-row inmates for Project NOAH, a military-bankrolled biomedical experiment using a longevity virus found in some nasty Bolivian bats. Naturally, mankind is punished for its jingoistic hubris and the project soon runs amok, unleashing grotesquely mutated vampires—virals—on the world, bringing the human race to near-extinction. Fast-forward 93 years to the ravaged wastelands of the once-great ‘Merica, wherein an isolationist community of beleaguered descendants employs high-wattage lights to protect the colony from the photophobic dracs. However, an expedition to recharge the failing batteries is elevated to a chance prospect of reclaiming the world after renegade protagonist Peter Jaxon happens upon a strange girl who not only appears ageless but can communicate telepathically with the virals.

Cronin takes the time to explore his ensemble cast, masterfully imbuing each character with life and personality, and ultimately reveals the depths of their convictions in the face of impossible odds. From the tormented FBI Agent who steps into the role of surrogate father to ensure a young girl’s safety as the world they know crumbles around them, to the unwavering band of colony warriors who persist in their struggle against inhuman monsters even in the face of the dying light. Readers will find themselves cheering for the book’s badass heroine, Alicia “Lish” Donadio, a Valkyrie warrior who could go toe-to-toe with the headstrong likes of Lara Croft (even without the superhuman vampire serum thrown in); just as readers' hearts will bleed for Anthony Carter, the benign death-row inmate turned government guinea pig whose sole crime was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You may even feel a pang of compassion for the misunderstood virals. By all outward appearances they are indestructible, merciless spawns from Hell, and yet inside each of them is a small perpetual voice that wonders who they are, a voice yearning for identity.

Fellow readers, do not be daunted by this 766-page behemoth, for The Passage is a worthwhile investment that pays dividends in panache prose, compelling characters, and show-stopping action sequences. Mark my words; once the crossbows are firing overhead and bloodthirsty virals are flying at you from amidst the darkened rafters and billowy treetops, you’ll be running so fast that you’ll be left breathless by the final page—an evocative, albeit ambiguous caesura that's sure to have you clawing for the next volume, eager to learn the fates of these sympathetic heroes. Interestingly, Cronin offers glimpses of his master plan, using brief excerpts to imply that the human race will endure, though it may take a thousand years for things to return to normal.

The Passage TV Tiein Edition A Novel Book One of The Passage Trilogy Justin Cronin Books Reviews

I'm fun of post-Apocalypse sci-fi. It's a guilty pleasure transcending to scary tales told around campfire in the childhood I guess. I watch The Walking Dead. I read King's books.
When I stumbled onto Cronin's trilogy it felt like Christmas. I felt even more though when first chapter of the book reminded me of Crishton novels. And... it all fell to pieces. Quagmire of the flat faceless characters, bunch of hints on some plot turn that never materializes. At some points it feels like the author as lost in his narrative as his characters are lost in their dreams.
I'm still fighting through Passage. With dread I look at 's hint "5 more hrs left in the book". Passage is not the book that keeps you reading well into the night despite Monday morning rapidly approaching. It's a book that you read as a chore forcing yourself to swallow few pages at a time. Spare yourself a torture, skip it. I feel like my 5 hrs belong to something better.
SPOILER ALERT.

The one thing I am less a fan of than post apocalyptic stories is vampires, so I stay as clear from these books as possible but I was flying to Europe and needed a big fat book to keep me company, this book seems very popular, and there's no teen romance, so I bought it. I can only agree with many reviewers that the 1st part of the book is entertaining and well written, and the second part, the one set in the future, misses the mark. The biggest problem for me was that all characters speak with the same voice. If you read a piece of dialog by itself, you cannot tell who's speaking. Several times I was a little distracted and had to go back and double check who was talking to whom. Several characters are very caricatural, like the obligatory combat chick, and the obligatory evil government guy. Another problem I had was the fact Cronin can't seem to make up his mind whether the vampire plague is a scientifically based thing, an engineered virus, or some mystical stuff with telepathy and souls. You can't have it both ways. And finally, I really wish we'd stop resorting to the immensely lazy device of "you kill one, you kill them all". Even bees don't die on the spot if you kill the queen. But of course, it's a lot easier than having to go after each and every vampire, monster, killer robot, or whatever, right? You just have to have a showdown between the good guy(s) and the evil queen and then they all get to live happily ever after. Yawn. But Cronin is only one in a very long list of offenders, so it would be unfair to single him out.
So because Cronin can write pretty well overall, because the 1st part of the book is good, and because some of the characters were interesting (except the stereotypes I mentioned earlier) the book gets 3 stars. But I will not be reading the sequels.

Trevor and Lawrynn's story was exciting. You can't always go by what you think about a person until you really get to know them. I had to reread it again just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I liked how the story was told and how it all came together. That Alton though (head shaking and stank face). What made him think Lawrynn would go for that!!!!! Authoress Bianca you did that!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
I love this awesome book. The Spencer men are so yummy! I devoured Trevor and Lawrynn’s journey to their HEA in one day, it is that good! It was also great to catch up with Travis and Kriss as well. One click now and enjoy this am a big read.
Was good read this in one sitting...so glad trev and Law got 8i together and realized wut they wanted... wish it was more .. those Spencer brothers is something else snuff I love the bond Kriss ,Law and Russ had they were the true meaning of friends for life...
Not a bad read I had read the first one and stumbled up on this one. Lawryn was head strong and since she didn’t trust men she had little to none patient for them either(family issue ) jasmine ☹️ But Trevor kept turning to her when Lawery kept running to Alton.☹️
There is a eww☹️ Factor of sexing cousins at the same time. But they finally came to senses wit a little nugge.
Things where pretty sweet when everyone came to their right mind.
I could go on and on, no need! Loveee Trevor, he was not as bad as I thought. Great love story, just the right amount of EVERYTHING! Sex scenes, pure love making, on another level. Cant wait for Bianca next book. 💘
I really loved these two... I like that Lawrynn was not taking any mess from Trevor. I also loved that Trevor had a soft spot for her. They both helped each other out. I liked that she humbled him and I liked that he didn't give up on her. This book was funny, mushy and all around really good!!! Great job Bianca
The growth of an artist is always beloved to see. Whenever I pick up a Bianca book, I expect to be entertained. I expect to love, hate, and maybe cry as I go thru it with the characters. I expect to read a well written story with character growth. I expect to read a book with a plot. She's never let me down. Good job with this one

The Secretary A Novel Renée Knight 9780062362353 Books

Great title, had me wondering what this book could be about. A psycho secretary?
Nope. More like a narcissistic boss who cares very little about her employees or how she treats people.
I didn’t care much for ANY of the characters. They were all flawed and I didn’t root for one of them. In fact, I wanted them to all fall down.
The actual secretary only had herself to blame for her impending downfall. Her boss didn’t ever think she’d get caught. Everyone just seemed blah and uncaring. At times I was bored with the book and found myself wanting to skip to the end. I didn’t. However, when I did get to the end I found it fascinating. I understood how the secretary felt. Betrayal can be lethal. The abuse she endured over the years, even though it was her own selfishness- made it sad for how it ended. Oh well. At least I finished the book.

The Secretary A Novel Renée Knight 9780062362353 Books Reviews

"Being a secretary back then was, it seems, not so different to now. That ability to make oneself invisible. It is astounding the number of conversations carried on in front of us, as if we don't exist. The silent witness is a role I'm quite used to. Watching, listening - as quiet as a mouse, at the heart of events - my loyalty and discretion never in question. And yet, loyalty and direction are qualities for which I have paid a heavy price."

This is the story of Christine Butcher, an average wife and mother, who accepts the position of personal assistant to Mina Appleton. After 18 long years of service, loyalty, and absolute discretion it appears secrets are about to spill. When the celebrated Mina is accused of partaking in some unethical business transactions in order to profit for herself Christine has to ask herself how far she is willing to go to protect Mina.

Part psychological thriller part court room drama and totally entertaining. I'll admit that it is a slow burn of a book but I find Renee Knights writing so engaging that it didn't take away from this novel. I had no idea before reading this how cutthroat the supermarket industry is. Another point goes to the author for writing a realistic thriller one where suspension of disbelief is not required. You know all the while that the story is leading up to something big and Renee Knight does not disappoint. The last quarter of this book had me glued to the pages. I thought the ending was bloody brilliant! 4 stars!

Thank you to Edelweiss and HarperCollins for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Christine is trusted. But those years of loyalty and discretion come with a high price. And eventually Christina will pay.

Yet, it would be a mistake to underestimate such a steadfast woman. Because as everyone is about to discover, there’s a dangerous line between obedience and obsession.

People are not what you might think. Below the surface, there can lie a totally different person. In The Secretary, emphasis on the first syllable of secretary - secret, we meet Christine Butcher, a young wife and mother seeking a secretarial position. She's offered a job working for the second in command at Appleton grocery's administration. Christine snaps up the job. We get to watch as she smoothly fits into Mina Appleton's work and personal lives, making herself nearly indispensable as Mina works her way up the corporate ladder. But is she indispensable?

When after many years of working for Mina Appleton, Christine, Mina, and Mina's driver, Dave, all wind up in a court proceeding. During the trial, Christine seems to change. That change have consequences.

I thought this was a very good story, but rather predictable through much of it. I'll be honest; I didn't like the characters very well. I found Christine to be a very weak woman, willing to sacrifice her marriage and her child for her job. Mina, despite her false facade of friendliness and compassion, always came across, to me, as a greedy, grasping viper.

I can't say that this is a book that left me feeling good about much of anything. It's a sad commentary on the shallowness of people's lives, the desire to feel better than those around you. And greed! In the end, for both women, it's all about greed, in one way or another, about which one will receive the most attention.

SPOILER/WARNING
This book includes a scene of suicide. It also includes cruelty and perjury.

I won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
Liked the writing but was saddened that the character didn’t see what she was losing.
This was a bargain book that was not worth that price.
All the YA writers seem to be amping up the 'gruesome'. Too much blood, too much terror, just too much war and horribleness. It is all-consuming. This book just didn't deliver the further character development and emotional buy-in of the prior two books.

A Reaper at the Gates An Ember in the Ashes Sabaa Tahir Books Reviews

I am still waiting for Helene and Harper to be together. I'd like to see Musa get his wife back. Oh, yeah, why aren't Laia and Elias together?! The way this book ended, I'm expecting at least one more...and I really need Laia and Elias to end up together.
I know that a good story puts its characters through unspeakable terrors, but there was very little in this book that didn’t make me sad. Which in turn made it hard to read. With that being said I didn’t give up because Sabba is a master storyteller and I know she is leading me on this journey for a reason, and I will definitely be reading the next book when it comes out. Her world building and characters are rich and fully developed allowing me to feel like I’m right there among them.
Here's my review for A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir, the third but not final book in An Ember in the Ashes series. I love how the book opens with the Nightbringer’s point of view! The author gives us insight into the kingdom’s history and at the present time, the scholars are being extinguished but we see that in the past the scholars have done the same thing to the Jinn, the Nightbringer’s people. Very interesting and so much like the harsh reality we live in. Elias’ fate and Laia’s future hold mystery. Helene, as the Blood Shrike, stands steadfastly by her sister Livia’s side. Livia has a fortunate surprise that could change the Empire for the better. Learning more about Keris and her past was fascinating as was learning more about Laia’s mother’s story. Elias gives up everything to help others because of his kindness and tremendous strength. Reaper at the Gates hurts my heart but builds distant hope for the amazing characters, 5 stars!
Wow, this one was really good and I couldn't put it down. I wish I could do 4.5 stars, just because I feel like this book had less of the characters together and more there own separate thing. I am however not happy with 'how' the book ended, it was soul crushing and I am really hoping for a happier sequel to this one. It just seemed like every bad thing that could happen did and it was super unavoidable. Elia's thing was heartbreaking and hopefully (just like the last book) he can come back to himself a bit. Hoping Helena really shows more emotion in the next, it really feels like she wants to here but she doesn't. I liked it all in all.
Loved the first book of this series, Ember in the Ashes. Unfortunately, book two was not as good, neither is book three, and with the ending, sounds like she plans a book 4. She probably should have tightened up book 2 and 3 rather than stretching for a 4th book.
How do I convey the beautifully succinct writing by the venerable Mrs. Sabaa Tahir without gushing incoherently?!? I'll try my best... here goes...

If you haven't already started this series I HIGHLY recommend you do so immediately. It is an affirmation of Hope and ceaseless Possibility in the face of dire, desperate circumstances... a theme that is extremely poignant due to the chaotic/ uncertain times we currently live in. From the very start we are dropped off right into the chaos where A Torch Against the Night left off. The pacing was perfect. There were twists and betrayals and bloodshed... Oh My!!

The characters were rich and nuanced. They felt like old friends/nemesis you have grown to love and love to hate. They were crafted magnificently. True to the dichotomy of real life personas, each one was depicted as varying shades of grey. I loathe characters that are drawn either purely White or starkly Black... BRING ON THE GRADIENTS BABY!!! Mrs. Tahir manages to make you feel empathy and compassion for the antagonists (after seeing what lead them down the path toward hatred and wickedness). I felt conflicted (as I'm sure you will see) as to who was the "victim" and who the evildoers...for all had claim to both... and really, isn't that the mark of a well written, truly visceral hero/villain?? The multiple POVs worked. They played off of the next person's arc so skillfully that I was saddened each time a chapter came to an end. Elias's role, on the other hand, felt like fodder... or the sticky icky pie filler that could have easily been left out (if not for his usefulness in the last quarter of the book). It felt like he was used as a means to move things along in places that needed a quick plot progression That was a little sad since he was, and should continue to be, an integral player...imho.

This installment was multifaceted. It boasted nefarious jinn, mischiviously violent ghosts, seers/Augurs, a smattering of warlocks, a tiny dallop of romance, twisty reveals and LOADS of bloody vengeance. What else can you possibly want in a book?? It's a gritty book in a heart wrenching series and I love every single word of it!! I will continue to shout its praise from the mountaintops.... mountaintops I say and I truly, deeply, infatically believe you will too. Go ahead, prove me wrong, I'd love to read all about it.

~Enjoy
The first book I loved and couldn't wait for the second book. Im not sure why the book deviated from Elias, Helena and Keris. They really made book one an excellent read. See where Im going with this, I couldn't stand Laia and her storyline. I just kind of skim through her chapters and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with Elias and Helena. Personally, I would have love to read some chapters on Keris and Marcus. Anyway, if there's a book four I don't think I will be buying it especially at the $8-$10 price range. 4 stars are for the first two books carrying the last book.
All the YA writers seem to be amping up the 'gruesome'. Too much blood, too much terror, just too much war and horribleness. It is all-consuming. This book just didn't deliver the further character development and emotional buy-in of the prior two books.

The Hollow Kingdom Book I The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy Clare B Dunkle Books

I absolutely love this book. This was one of my favorite books as a child, and it was an absolute pleasure to read it again. The Hollow Kingdom is about a girl named Kate who, newly orphaned along with her sister, Emily, travels to Hallow Hill to live with her new guardians. Enchanted by her mysterious surroundings, Kate enjoys her new life until she starts to have the reoccurring feeling that she's being watched. Soon Kate discovers that her secret admirer is none other than the Goblin King. A battle of wits ensues as Kate desperately tries to avoid being stolen away to become a goblin bride.
The book is definitely darker now that I read it as an adult, especially the fact that Kate is often made powerless. Whether its the king of the goblins or her guardians, Kate has difficulties getting other characters to listen to what she has to say. Often, they discredit her words and ignore her wishes for their own personal ideas. However, I was willing to forgive this substantial flaw because Kate is a really strong heroine. Even though the people around her ignore her, Kate never stops fighting for what she wants. Even when she loses a battle, she does so on her own terms. Despite ignoring her wishes at the beginning, towards the end all the characters grow to respect her and to realize the mistake they made by underestimating her.
What really keeps calling me back to this book however, is the world building. I absolutely love the goblin kingdom and I think it's one of the most unique and interesting fantasy worlds that I've ever read. I am most impressed by the diversity of the goblins. Dunkle isn't scared of putting off the readers by making her mythical creatures horrifying. In fact, Marak, the male protagonist, is absolutely grotesque. Through this choice, she illustrates a world in which beauty is not important and the most important thing to a race of people is strength and community.
So, although some people may apply the same arguments against Beauty and the Beast to The Hollow Kingdom, I feel that the good points of this book outweigh the bad. The writing is well done and the world building is wonderful. Kate's and Marak's relationship may stem from a terrible tradition, but it resolves itself into one of mutual respect.

The Hollow Kingdom Book I The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy Clare B Dunkle Books Reviews

Kate and her sister Emily have been orphaned, and their guardian and relative has sent them to live with their great-aunts as he has no desire to raise them. The girls have inherited the estate that they now live on, and there is something odd going on at Hallow Hill nearby. Kate begins to fear that they are being watched, and when they meet an odd group of "gypsies" she worries even more. Their uncle scoffs at her worries, but Kate finds out that their leader is the Goblin King who lives in the underworld beneath Hallow Hill and he intends for Kate to become his queen. All is not what it seems, and determining who has evil intents is a bit trickier than it first appears. After escaping a few attempts from the goblins, when Emily disappears, Kate fears that the goblins have her and makes a grand bargain to save her. The story integrates some elements from the Persephone myth but takes the story to a whole other level as we see Kate grow in understanding about the goblins and her fate in life. This is the first of a trilogy and I look forward to more of this delightful fantasy series.
I'm a parent, so not the target audience. My 6th grade son read it for a group discussion. He found the first half of the book dreadfully slow, but did enjoy the creativity displayed in imagining the underground world and it's various creatures. He also enjoyed the horror movie type action near the end of the book. I read this book at his request, so he could discuss his thoughts before a group discussion.

Basically, this is "Beauty and the Beast" with a goblin twist. That alone isn't a problem. I adore fairy tales, and love comparing and contrasting the standard themes across different times and cultures, and look forward to new interpretations. "Cinderella" has been done, time and time again, yet different lenses reflecting culture or times can offer different interpretations and ways of looking at the same old story. "Into the Woods" is a favorite example of this. However, I'm an adult.

In this twist on "Beauty and the Beast" there wasn't anything fresh. In fact, I was dismayed that kidnapping a bride was justified by Marak and yet Kate could still respect and care for him! This is the romantic lesson we want our sons and daughters absorbing? I get that she had a better life and was safer and better cared for by the "monster" than her own family. I guess the "lesson" is supposed to be that appearances can be deceiving and those that are "supposed" to care for you (family) may not, and someone who is "ugly" can be nice. Nice, perhaps, but still immoral enough to knowingly terrify a young woman, and justify kidnapping her for his own purposes. Did he really have NO other options? With all his magic, he couldn't find some other way? It would have been so much better had Marak let her be on the topside long enough to take over her land and relocate whoever is left, after he learns to act like a being who respects others rather than justify his cruel actions, and then he would be someone she may grow to care for, and get over his appearance, and CHOOSE to marry and rule together - she above and he below.

I found this book quite predictable with one dimensional stereotypical characters. Of COURSE Kate is smart, and strong, and her beautiful looks are mentioned over and over. The aunts are ineffectual and useless, naturally, and Hugh is just selfish and evil, through and through.

Also, the writing was a bit dull and simple. I believe many kids in this age group can handle more vivid and complex vocabulary and a more elegant and sophisticated style. It felt like Twilight for the preteen set. Which is great for the author, if you can sell it to Hollywood,

On the plus side, the descriptions of the underground world, it's creatures, and the Goblin/Elf history were imaginative. I wish the descriptions, which were plentiful and described a magical place, would have been written in a more eloquent style.

My son does think this would make a good movie, because it would be unique and visually stunning, if done well. However, I would hope they would find a way to make Marak more likeable and somehow not make it disappointing when his captive wife falls in love with him.

Code Name Lise The True Story of the Woman Who Became WWII Most Highly Decorated Spy Larry Loftis Books

It’s 1942 and German troops have occupied most of Europe. A French woman named Odette Sansom wants to do her part to fight the Germans and manages to become a spy code-named Lise. She joins forces with an English officer named Peter Churchill who will be her commanding officer. Remarkably, Odette had once been married and still had three children but she persuades a relative to take care of them while she fulfills her patriotic duty for France.
Odette is alone in Arles, France on Christmas eve 1942 and joins a group of German officers at their hotel. After a feast of cake and several bottles of Cote du Rhone she persuades the Germans to move a piano upstairs where the sounds can be enjoyed by a greater number of hotel guests. Not exactly a bit of spy craft but it does attest to Odette’s cleverness.
Peter, Odette and several compatriots are captured by Nazis and taken by train to one of Germany’s infamous prison camps. Odette is subjected to some torture that even made me cringe but she would not reveal any military secrets. Peter and Odette begin to have romantic feelings about each other during this period and told their captors that they were married even though they were not. Because of Peter’s last name, the Nazis believed that they had caught a relative of the British Prime Minister; neither Peter nor Odette tried to tell them otherwise. The Nazis sent an offer to England and offer a trade: we’ll give you Peter Churchill in exchange for Rudolf Hess. England, however, would not agree to the switch.
Both Peter and Odette survive the war, are released from prison and travel to England where they eventually marry. Because of her heroism during the war, Odette is selected to receive an award. In a large ceremony the George Cross is presented to her by none other than King George VI, the only woman being honored along with 249 men.
Photographs, reference notes and the author’s commentary are provided. This is an inspiring book of non-fiction that reads like a exciting and tension-filled novel.
The author focuses a lot on the spy's time in prison, being mistreated, which I guess is appropriate since she got awards for her bravery in not talking. But I think he also likes going into descriptions of what exactly torture is like, which I find weird. And, ok, he tells us that she convinced prison guards of things that weren't true but that kept her and her captain safe. But. I wanted to know what the group did BEFORE she went to prison, and also read about a competent woman just doing something well.

The first of the book focuses on other people's incompetence and on various mishaps. You come away thinking that this woman has a lot of respect from people but did kind of bumble through her work. I doubt that that's the reality.

, please recommend more books about women doing things well. I don't want to read about mistreatment and misadventures. Thanks.
This story is gripping often hair raising and true! I so appreciate these books that remind us of our shared history and the heroes that lived it. This book is such a worthwhile and inspiring read. Just buy the book already!
Granted we had several "snowed-in" days, but I finished this book in two sittings - couldn't put it down. I'd read a couple books on Odette's compatriot Nancy Wake, the White Mouse, and it was equally chilling/exciting/mesmerizing. These women (and men) had WAY more courage and endurance than I could ever hope to have! I hope we still have young people "coming up" who have this kind of patriotism and love for their fellowmen.
A captivating true story of a female spy in World War II. In all honesty, I had to read this in a 3 day time span. It was so harrowing, horrific and heart-breaking, I had to take many breaks while reading.

'Code Name Lise' worked for the SPINDLE Circuit (Special Operations Executive) or SOE as it is referred to in this book. She was born in France but moved to England at an early age. Odette was her name at birth.

The entire time I was reading this true story, my admiration for her grew. From her recruitment into SOE and the training, her determination to succeed illustrated her true spirit. And, of course, I kept wondering what created her motivation? Despite numerous serious health problems at an early age, she persevered. And, persevered with an open mind and spirit.

The depth of the training was intense and was divided into 4 phases. And, it should be noted that 80% of the trainees were disqualified. Not one area was left out....physical, explosives, weapons, ciphers, killing and even included grenades and machine guns. These agents were trained to the maximum and trust me, without this intense training, some would have not survived.

Finally in early 1943, she was on her way and SPINDLE was set. Her commanding officer was Peter Churchill and the mission was in Marseilles, France. The beginning of the spy portion in this book.

For me, some items really stood out including the rationing of food during the war. Also, on a personal note my Dad was in WW II aboard an aircraft carrier and he had told me years ago that the radio equipment was so heavy. In this book, the radio operator was tasked with carrying the equipment to different locations to avoid detection. As one may surmise, these operators were truly sought after as they had knowledge of many items the other side was extremely interested in.

The treatment of the prisoners in the prisons and in the Concentration Camps was just plain horrific. The Gestapo had interrogation fine-tuned to extract the most information. I have never read more details about the interrogation techniques than in this book. And, this is when I had to take frequent breaks...excruciating is the word that comes to mind but really torture at its finest...ouch...

Some better moments occurred, however, with the selfless priest, Father Steinert. Thank God, for people of his caliber... Truly a saint put into the cloak of a priest at the right time for the prisoners.

And, I also kept wondering where in the world did Odette get her intestinal fortitude to carry on? Where does courage come from? And, why did she join in the SOE in the first place?

The author has a most interesting Appendix that explains the awards (including the George Cross) given to Odette and Peter were not without a lot of controversy. And, controversy that continued for many years.

Truly an educational read for me...especially the portions on the training aspect for SOE, the treatment of the prisoners by the Gestapo, and the manner in which the missions were carried out.

Most highly recommended...

The Devil Thief The Last Magician Lisa Maxwell Books

The Devil’s Thief by Lisa Maxwell picks up where The Last Magician left off. Now that Esta has traveled back in time to save Harte, the two of them work together to find the scattered elemental stones. Can they find them before the Order does?

I really enjoyed this beast of a book! It was beautifully written, featuring rich world building and life-like characters. While the sheer amount of details made the plot drag at times, I still loved reading it!

The Devil’s Thief bounces back and forth between multiple character’s perspectives. There are a lot of characters in this book, and you get inside each of their heads! My favorite storyline to follow was probably Viola’s, especially once she meets Ruby. Viola is a fierce character with a rough family history. She’s tough–physically and emotionally–and has a strong moral compass guiding her actions. Her part in the book was interesting. In The Last Magician, you start to get to know Viola, but in The Devil’s Thief, you get to know her well. I really like her as a character!

Harte and Esta were also fun to watch in The Devil’s Thief. There’s so much tension between the two characters, but unfortunately, there’s a huge elephant sitting between the two of them that hinders most of their interactions. I’ll be curious to see how their relationship continues to develop.

The ending of The Devil’s Thief was great! Understanding what’s happening with the Book, Nibsy, and Harte is utterly fascinating. I can only imagine how this will all play out in the next book.

All of the characters in The Devil’s Thief were well-written. Lisa Maxwell knows how to write stunning characters! There are a lot of characters in this book, but they’re easy to keep straight because they’re so unique and individualized. I couldn’t ask for better character development.

If you haven’t read The Last Magician, I highly recommend you do so, that way you read The Devil’s Thief!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing the Kindle version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Devil Thief The Last Magician Lisa Maxwell Books Reviews

The Devil's Thief is a wonderful 2nd book in the series. The writing is so rich and full, it sucks you in and takes you for a wild ride, just when you think you know what the next twist is..you don't! And is there anything better than romantic tension? NO! This book delivers on romance, action, characters, emotion, history, setting...everything. If you liked The Last Magician you will LOVE The Devil's Thief.
The Last Magician and The Devil's Thief are excellent books! Time travel and magic! The relationship between characters are perfectly honest. In the first book, it took a few chapters before I really fell in love. I wasn't sure if I would be able to get into it at all, actually. But then once the stories began to blend and mix, it became exciting and i couldn't put it down. I have to pace myself with The Devil's Thief so as to not finish it so quickly. I want to be able to enjoy this book as long as I can, and self control has been tough!
I would have given this 5 stars except when I read The Last Magician I was under the impression that Book 2 would end it. Instead, it expanded the tale ten fold. So many twists. So many new characters and sub plots. And of course it ended with a total cliff hanger.
Now, let's get this straight. I really liked this book a lot. I agree with another reader that Viola and Jianyu's story line was the most interesting. Maybe because we knew so little about them in Book 1. I hate Jack Grew and Nibsy Lorcan. Each time they appear in the narrative I want someone to do them in. This is a sign of good writing I am totally immersed in the story emotionally. I also don't like Mother Ruth and didn't from the start...again, I don't think we, the reader, are supposed to. Maggie and North are an interesting addition as well. This book caused me so much anxiety. Every time the plans of the characters went awry, and they did a lot, I had to put it down for a bit to calm myself.

And now i have to wait for the third installment. I'm not happy about that. I want to know how this all concludes, NOW. oh well. Please Lisa Maxwell, write book 3 quickly so I can spend my hard earned money on it and ease my anxiety.
This is a marvelous book, richly imagined, skillfully plotted, and densely peopled with both real and imaginary figures from a variety of historical times and places. It's fantasy, of course, but that fantasy has an ugly aura of truth in the oppression of magical people (Mageus) by the wealthy and powerful in Maxwell's fictional world. The connection is all too clear to today's politics, whereby the uber-rich consolidate their power by stirring up fears of an "invasion" of dark-skinned, dangerous people from abroad. Maxwell makes this world seem terribly real--because it is terribly real. There's no in-your-face politics, just a compelling fictional narrative that uncannily echoes our own times.

I did find the book a bit long, particularly in the scenes involving the romantic leads. It felt to me as if Maxwell was manufacturing a reason to keep the two from consummating their physical attraction to each other Harte has somehow taken the power of the Ars Arcana (the book of magic) into his body, and that power somehow endangers Esta's power or her life or the life of everyone on earth, or something like that. At points, I wanted to say, "for heaven's sake, you two, why don't you just sleep with each other?" I was far more interested in what was going on around Harte and Esta--the attacks on Mageus, the counterattacks by the magical group calling themselves the Antistasi, the drama of the St. Louis world's fair, the shifting through time--than I was in the love story. That's not really a weakness of the book, but I felt as if Maxwell was satisfying a trope (the on-again, off-again relationship one so often finds in YA novels) just to make the book feel more YA, when in fact it's an adult historical fantasy in every other respect.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing the version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Wrong Bachelor eBook Alexandra Moody

I loved Alexandra Moody's ARC series, so I jumped at the chance to read this new book of hers. I have a weak spot for YA romances with some kind of twist, and a high school version of The Bachelor really tickled my fancy.

My greatest criticism of The Wrong Bachelor is that it was kind of predictable, but that's romance for you. Still, I love a good enemies-to-lovers trope. The concept of a high school charity dating show was also quite cool, though I'm not entirely sure how the idea got approved by the school board.

The main characters -- popular, beautiful Madi and popular, handsome Cole -- seemed a little bland to me at first. Madi's only character traits were that she was nice and pretty, while Cole himself was kind of a douche. I had a hard time working out how Madi could ever fall for him when he seemed to take pleasure in making her angry, and I feared that the inevitable ending wouldn't be believable. In the end, however, Cole turned out to be really sweet, though I'm not quite sure when or why that shift happened. Nevertheless, it was nice to see that character development.

A much more interesting character for me was Angus, the showrunner who would stop at nothing to amp up the drama. It was fascinating to see just how far he would go to get more votes and views, and his actions raised some really interesting questions about just how ethical reality shows like this are. I also loved how Angus's choices and the hype around the show caused some serious problems for Madi. (What can I say? I'm a sucker for drama.)

Overall, The Wrong Bachelor is a fun and enjoyable read. It's one of those books that you can devour in just a few sittings for some nice light escapism. Even though it's obvious how things will end up, the joy is in the journey, not the destination.

#Cadi4Eva!

The Wrong Bachelor eBook Alexandra Moody Reviews

I love a good pride and prejudice remake and to throw in the childhood backstory making it friends to more than friends as well, hit me right in the feels. The characters were pretty believable as high schoolers. Though I think Cole was actually one of the more mature characters despite his tendency to tease the girl he loves. I found the ending a be pretty sweet!
This was not enjoyable for me. There were quite a few errors and the story just didn't have my buy in. The characters could have been developed a bit more. A disappointing read all around
It was good. However, the lead, Madison, was such a disappointment throughout the entire book. I do not like crybaby leads . I also don't like when girls are portrayed as being uninterested in what someone's side of a story is. It's selfish. And the lead seemed selfish and bratty majority of the time. Even so, I can see this made into a movie. Stereotypical rom com.
I always love a good feel good, love/ hate story and this one did not disappoint. From the moment I started reading, I was intrigued as to how everything would turn out. First in the case of Madi’s boyfriend all the way down to the competition. To which, I must point out had all the “Bachelor” cliches—and I didn’t hate it. That is something coming from someone who doesn’t care for the show. Cole was sweet and I instantly liked him and I couldn’t understand how Madi didn’t see, like everyone else, that he was totally into her! If you want a book that makes you feel light and fluffy afterward, this is the book for you. I give it 5 stars because it did not disappoint, it was well written, and I connected with the characters. The only flaw I had was the cliche’s of the bachelor, but of course then it wouldn’t be a book based off the show if the cliche’s were not there. It is the few times that cliches work well and you can’t help but love it.
This book started out well enough, however i felt that it wasn’t a strong plot. The main character, Madi didn’t grow as the story progress. She could of stand up more for herself and not depend on other characters to assist her and she should have demand Cole to explain why he had stop being her friend. Additionally, whatever happened to Madi’s overly involved parents that was watching her dating show and tweeting out their support? I thought the fight in the end to separate the two characters was weak and cliché and could of been better. The redeeming moment came at the end, I thought the scene at the dance was romantic.
Overall a nice read and sweet romance. The characters are likeable and believable (even if you want to scream a bit at Madi's self-doubt sometimes), and the romance develops at a nice and believable pace.

The ending, however, was a bit cringe-worthy. It seemed the author was set on creating another great conflict before ending the book in a sugar-sweet climax, and thus a situation, that should have been solve-able in a few minutes if Cole has opened his mouth, was blown WAY out of proportions...

However, this artificial catastrophy was not as poorly carried out as in some of the other books, where I've encountered this, and it didn't end up ruining the book - just bringing it down to four stars. All in all, I can certainly recommend this book for a nice, romantic read, if you don't have any other must-read on your list.
Found this in my 'Suggested reading' list and took a chance on it. So glad I did! I love finding new authors who write clean romance. Not only is the writing well done, the characters were well developed, and the storyline was fun.

I really connected with Madi and could feel her turmoil after being dragged through what she had. The side characters were also well done and added more depth and color to the story. I felt Laurie was a touch cliché, but there's a reason mean girls exit so frequently in YA novels. Sadly, they are out there in real life. So, it didnt pull me out too much.

There is some light language, but nothing close to what you'd hear in the halls of HS. It is only sprinkled in, which I appreciated.

I'd definitely recommend to friends! Awesome, fun, quick read ) Great job, Alexandra!
If you enjoy stories about strangers meeting at a bar and falling in love, you'll like this fun, short romance.
This is one of my favorite books by Ms. Colt. The pop culture convention was so much like the ones I've experienced and the romance was hot and heavy. I loved the characters and story line.
This read was short and to the point. Although the couple had a few hiccups they were meant to be. Great read!
I am so sick and tired of the author or trying to pass this off as a new book. This book has been out for over a year which I have read.
